Step-by-Step Guide to Making a Frosting Board

Making a frosting board is a fun and easy way to add some festive cheer to your holiday baking. With just a few simple materials, you can create a beautiful and functional frosting board that will make enjoying your holiday treats a breeze. Here’s a step-by-step guide to making your own frosting board.

Preparing the Board

The first step in making a frosting board is to choose the right board. You’ll want a board that is large enough to accommodate your largest cake or cookie, but not so large that it won’t fit in your workspace. A wooden cutting board or a tray are both good options.

Once you’ve chosen your board, you’ll need to cover it with a non-stick surface. Parchment paper or a silicone mat are both good options. Simply cut the parchment paper or mat to fit your board and secure it in place with tape or clips.

Make Your Frosting

I’ve got a recipe below to teach you how to make your own candy cane frosting! When you follow this recipe, you’ll have a sweet and minty frosting that is ready for dipping your favorite holiday treats.

To get started, you will need a 16oz tub of white frosting, red sugar sprinkles, candy canes, parchment paper, a plastic bag or piping bag, and a star tip.

Place parchment paper down on to your board. If it won’t stay, add small dots of frosting underneath the corners of the parchment paper.

With your frosting in the bag with tip attached, start making the shape of a candy cane, by squeezing out frosting one dot at a time. Make the candy cane shape bigger by building it with more frosting on the sides and top.

Once you have the shape you like, make two more candy cane shapes.

Add crushed candy canes and/or sugar sprinkles to the candy cane shapes.

Place in freezer for a few minutes. Carefully lift parchment to remove excess candy/sprinkles. Leave as-is or cut parchment pieces to separate and place where you would like.

Add snacks around to fill your board. We used Mini Nilla Wafers, mini pretzels, and chocolate graham crackers.

Adding Festive Decorations

Once your frosting is in place, it’s time to add some festive decorations. Sprinkles, edible glitter, and candy canes are all popular choices. You can also use fondant to create shapes and designs.

Creative Ideas for Christmas Frosting Boards

Themed Design Inspirations

When it comes to creating a frosting board for Christmas, the possibilities are endless. One great way to add some creativity to your board is to choose a theme. For example, you could create a board inspired by a winter wonderland, complete with snowflakes and icy blue tones. Or, you could opt for a more traditional Christmas theme, with red and green colors and classic holiday shapes like trees and stars.

Another fun idea is to create a board inspired by your favorite Christmas movies or stories. For example, you could create a board inspired by the Grinch, with green frosting and candy hearts. Or, you could create a board inspired by the Nutcracker, with ballet slipper-shaped cookies and frosting in shades of pink and purple.

Incorporating Edible Elements

In addition to using frosting and icing to create designs on your board, you can also incorporate other edible elements to add texture and flavor. For example, you could use crushed candy canes to create a peppermint-flavored frosting, or sprinkle coconut flakes on top of your board to create a snowy effect.

Another fun idea is to use different types of cookies or candies as decorations on your board. For example, you could use gingerbread cookies to create a house or a sleigh, or use candy canes to create a fence or a border around your board.

By incorporating these creative ideas into your Christmas frosting board, you can create a unique and festive treat that is sure to impress your friends and family.
